Audition Requirements
Auditions will be required for Undergraduate & Postgraduate students. The information below is for Undergraduate students. For Postgraduate audition info, please click here.
Audition Dates
15 August & 5 September 2026
If you will be attending the SICMF from 3-12 July, you may also audition within this time (all instruments except voice).
How to Schedule
- After you have applied online and submitted the required documents, your application is processed by the admissions office and forwarded to the Department of Music.
- Ms Francesca Levenderis will contact you via e-mail with information regarding your practical audition, and invite you to fill in a Google Form to book an audition slot.
- Audition days start at 08:00 and finish at 17:00.
- The final audition roster will be provided by Ms. Levenderis one week before the audition day.

Audition Venue
Where do in-person auditions take place?
Practical in-person auditions will take place at the Conservatoire, Department of Music, University of Stellenbosch, which is situated in Neethling street, Stellenbosch.
1. Practical Audition
BAMus, BMus and Diploma
- Students must prepare 3 Classical pieces from contrasting style periods at a minimum level comparable to Grade VII or higher of any of the recognised examination boards. (You need not have obtained a graded qualification from an examination board, nor do the chosen pieces need to be from one of the examination albums: we use Grade 7 as a tool to identify the difficulty level of repertoire)
- The String, Brass and Piano divisions also require technical work.
- Furthermore, sight-reading and a quick study is required for piano auditions.
Higher Certificate:
- Students must prepare 3 Classical pieces from contrasting style periods of Grade V/VI of any of the recognized examination boards. (You need not have obtained a graded qualification from an examination board, nor do the chosen pieces need to be from one of the examination albums: we use Grade V/VI as a tool to identify the difficulty level of repertoire.)
- If your main instrument is a bowed string instrument, you must have achieved a minimum standard that is equivalent to a Grade VI practical examination.
- The String, Brass and Piano divisions also require technical work.
- Furthermore, sight-reading and a quick study is required for piano auditions.
2. Theory & Aural Test
The theoretical test and aural test will take place on the same day as your practical audition.
BAMus, BMus and Diploma
The theoretical entrance test is comparable to Unisa Grade V and consists of figured base realisation in 4-part harmony, chord- and cadence identification, dictation and other pertinent aspects that relates to music literacy.
Higher Certificate
The theoretical entrance test is comparable to Unisa Grade III/IV and consists of pertinent aspects that relates to music literacy.
IMPORTANT TIPS
- Apply as early as possible.
- Once you receive our correspondence, fill in the Google Form as accurately as possible to book an audition.
- If you make enquiries regarding your audition or application status, remember to always include your Application ID.
- Check your e-mail (as well as your junk mail folder) regularly for correspondence. The university correspondence will be sent to the address submitted during your online entry.
