Masters in Social Work

SPECIFIC ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS  

• A four-year Bachelor’s degree in Social Work (NQF level 8) or other equivalent qualification that is approved by Senate.  

• An average final mark of 65% for Social Work as major.  

CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS  

Apply by 31 August of the preceding year.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE  

You must attend a workshop on research that does not contribute to the final mark and conduct an independent research project under the guidance of a supervisor. The outcomes of the programme have a direct connection with a specific field in social work and satisfy the requirements that are set by the South African Council for Social Service Professions.  

DURATION OF PROGRAMME  

The programme extends over a period of at least one academic year.  

APPLICATION PROCESS

  1. Download the Departmental Postgraduate Screening form here.​
  2. Complete and submit the Departmental Postgraduate Screening Form to Prof. Engelbrecht ([email protected]​).
  3. Apply online at How to Apply | Postgraduate | Stellenbosch University
  4. If your qualifications in Social Work were obtained at a tertiary institution outside South Africa, the Postgraduate Office will determine your eligibility to postgraduate studies by conducting a credential evaluation of your qualification(s) upon receipt of a formal application lodged to the University.​
  5. Applications open 1 April and close 31 August.
  6. Feedback on the success of the application will be provided in October with further details regarding the specific date for the postgraduate workshop to be attended.
  7. Students must register before the end of March and must register every year for the full period of study until the degree is obtained.
