Joy, generosity and community spirit were the hallmarks of the inaugural Birthday4Bursaries (B4B) Party, hosted by Prof Karin Baatjes, FMHS Vice Dean: Learning and Teaching. The lively event aimed to raise both funds and awareness for the B4B initiative, which supports the Ithemba Bursary Fund, an essential source of financial assistance for health sciences students in the faculty.
The highlight of the day came when the Tygerberg Student Representative Council (TSRC) announced an extraordinary pledge of R50,000 towards the campaign, marking one of the largest student-led contributions to date.
“Financial barriers shouldn’t stand in the way of someone’s dream of becoming a health professional. That’s why we decided to step up and make this tangible donation to the Ithemba Bursary Fund to support our fellow TygerMaties,” said Mogau Boko, TSRC Student Financial Access Officer.
B4B has become an annual tradition in which Baatjes invites the Stellenbosch University community to contribute to the Ithemba Bursary Fund in lieu of birthday gifts. Her birthday on 31 January marks the launch of each year’s campaign.
This year’s initiative carries special significance as it coincides with the Faculty’s 70th anniversary. In recognition of this milestone, the campaign set an ambitious target of R70,000. To build excitement, Baatjes hosted the first-ever B4B Party, complete with music, fun activities and, of course, cake.
The TSRC’s generous contribution pushed the campaign beyond its initial goal, inspiring Baatjes to double the target. The new fundraising goal now stands at R140,000.
“I am quite stunned, and very, very grateful to our students for stepping into this space to support one another. Thanks to their leadership, together with the contributions of staff and the broader public, we have already surpassed our original goal,” Baatjes said.
TSRC chairperson Thandolwethu Noinyane emphasised that every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference. “The R50,000 may seem like a lot, but in the bigger picture it is still not enough to meet the needs on campus. As student leaders, we wanted to model the vision of support. We encourage everyone to join this campaign so that no TygerMatie is left behind.”
The TSRC also extended a call to alumni. “As former TygerMaties, you’ve witnessed the challenges faced on this campus. Your donation is more than money, it is an act of hope, creating an impact now and for years to come,” added Boko.
