Biomedical Research Institute
Preparing the next generation of industry experts
Stellenbosch University’s Biomedical Research Institute (BMRI) is a world-class facility that collaborates closely with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. BMRI spearheads innovative medical initiatives to improve health outcomes across South Africa and Africa. We focus on advancing diagnostics, prevention, and treatment for high-impact diseases such as tuberculosis, cardio-metabolic conditions, HIV, diabetes, and neurological disorders.
Our facilities set new benchmarks in research, featuring the first Automated Biorepository in the Southern Hemisphere, capable of storing millions of samples under continuous 24/7 monitoring; and the largest BSL-3 laboratory in South Africa, which supports world-class infectious disease research. Complementing these are our specialised labs in electron microscopy, proteomics, FACS, and medical morphology, a modern clinical research unit, a bioinformatics hub, and contemporary conference spaces.
These assets empower us to drive transformative research that benefits our communities and the global health landscape. Our research efforts are strategically aligned with the UN Global Sustainable Development Goals, the African Union’s Agenda 2063, and South Africa’s National Development Plan, ensuring that our work addresses Africa’s most critical health challenges.
