In the SU Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), the examination of research master's degrees - also called master's degrees by thesis, is coordinated by the Tygerberg Doctoral Office. This excludes structured or coursework master's degrees. All examination reports for internal and external examiners of 100% research master’s degrees are processed via email address [email protected].

The mark weighting below applies when calculating the final mark of all master’s degrees by thesis - unless a historical stipulation explicitly deviating from this weighting still governs a programme. All contradictory Yearbook entries must progressively be brought in alignment with this standardised Faculty approach.

Note: Environments opt in or out of the supervisor mark per programme. The allocation of this portion of the mark is predetermined per programme, as confirmed to the FMHS Committee for Postgraduate Research by the relevant Postgraduate Programme Committee. Please find a breakdown of the option applicable per programme.

Following the oral, the supervisor report is submitted to [email protected]. The Tygerberg Doctoral Office submits the final supervisor report and all examiner reports to the Vice Dean: Research and Internationalisation, for approval of the mark and final result. Please avoid making the mark known prior to approval.

Once all aspects of the examination have been completed, the thesis is to be uploaded on SunScholar via the e-thesis nomination system and with the assistance of the supervisor or administrator in the academic environment.
