Our Impact

SUNHEART has transformed the Division of Cardiology at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital into a centre of excellence recognised both locally and internationally. By expanding clinical services, investing in modern infrastructure, and creating new training opportunities, SUNHEART has more than doubled the number of cardiologists in training and brought advanced care closer to patients through outreach facilities across the Western Cape. Flagship initiatives such as Echo in Africa, the Electrophysiology Program, and the SUNHEART Outreach Project extend life-saving diagnostics and treatments to thousands of patients, while global partnerships such as with GE Healthcare help strengthen research and community impact. Together, these efforts exemplify SUNHEART’s mission: to expand equitable access to world-class cardiology care while building skills and capacity across South Africa and the continent. Cardiology division renovations:

SUNHEART has played a pivotal role in transforming the Division of Cardiology at Stellenbosch University and Tygerberg Hospital through extensive renovations and infrastructure development. Outpatient facilities were redesigned and expanded, creating more space to treat patients and train students. The first radial suite in Africa was established, enabling safer, same-day cardiac catheterisation procedures that significantly reduce hospital stays and costs. A state-of-the-art lecture hall was built to support digital teaching and broadcast training sessions to wider audiences. In addition, a world-class research centre was developed in partnership with the British Society for Echocardiography, serving as the foundation for the Echo in Africa project. These renovations have more than doubled training capacity, strengthened research output, and dramatically improved patient access to advanced cardiology services across the Western Cape.
