Undergraduate and Honours Research Project Fund

What is it?

This fund is for research-related costs involved in conducting undergraduate research projects. Partial or full financial support for meritorious undergraduate and honours research projects in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) at Stellenbosch University. 

What is the amount awarded

Awards of up to R5,000 for undergraduate research projects and of up to R30,000 for honours research projects will be made.

Who is eligible?

Any undergraduate or honours student registered in the FMHS who is conducting research as part of their degree.

How do I apply?

  • Complete the latest version of the application form (URP-02-2026),
  • Attach the required supporting documents (2-page protocol synopsis, proof of registration, and ethics approval letter), together with the application form, as ONE PDF document, and
  • Submit completed application, signed by primary research supervisor to [email protected] before or on 30 May and/or 30 November.

Undergraduate Conference Presentation Fund

What is it? 

This fund provides financial support for undergraduate students to present their research at national or international conferences.

What is the amount awarded? 

Costs covered may include conference registration fees, travel, accommodation, stipend, and presentation-related expenses (e.g. poster printing), up to a maximum of R10,000.

Who is eligible?

Any undergraduate student registered at the FMHS, Stellenbosch University who wishes attend a conference to present results from research conducted as part of their undergraduate degrees, is eligible to apply. In the case of student group projects, where more than one member of the group wishes to present results from the same project at a conference, only one award will be made per group, for students to split between them to fund their attendance at the conference.

Undergraduate Publication Award Fund

What is it?

A financial award made to primary supervisors listed as co-authors on publications in accredited, peer-reviewed journals with co-author undergraduate students, whose research they have supervised as part of the students' registered degrees in the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences (FMHS).

What is the amount awarded?

Awards of R10,000 per qualifying publication will be made to primary supervisors who are co-authors on undergraduate publications. This award is to be directed toward undergraduate research within the relevant division or department. 

Who is eligible?

FMHS personnel who are both a co-author on a DHET-accredited, peer reviewed publication AND primary supervisor of an undergraduate student, the latter being listed as a co-author of the accredited published paper which resulted from an undergraduate research project.     

How do I apply?

  • Complete the latest version of the application form (UPI-02-2026). Hard copy applications are not permitted. 
     
  • Attach the required supporting documents (ethics approval letter, proof of acceptance of paper, published version of paper), together with the application form as ONE PDF document.
     
  • Submit the completed application form and published paper (as ONE PDF document) via email to [email protected] at any time during the year; all applications will be considered once per year, between May and November, and applicants will be notified of the outcome thereafter.
