Sport and Exercise Medicine

The Division of Sport and Exercise Medicine (DiSEM), housed within the Department of Exercise, Sport and Lifestyle Medicine at Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, aims to lead the field through impactful research, education, and clinical service. By translating research into practice, we enhance quality of life and drives social impact in the communities it serves.

The Division offers an MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine, as well as thesis-based MSc and PhD programmes. Research focuses on three key areas: using exercise and lifestyle to prevent and manage chronic disease, injury and illness surveillance in both conventional and adapted sports, and growth and maturation in youth sport.

We also provide clinical sport and exercise medicine services to recreational and professional athletes in both public and private sectors, supporting teams and sports academies with field-side and sport-specific care.

Our programmes

MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine

This MSc programme has been designed for students with an MBChB degree (or equivalent) who are interested in pursuing a master’s in science degree in Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM). The MSc programme consists of course work and a research assignment.

PhD in Sport Science

This PhD programme is for students with an interest in the field of Sport and Exercise Medicine and is 100% research driven. It does not contain any compulsory course work or clinical skill development, and you do not require an MBChB to register.
