Teaching & Learning

Undergraduate Offering

The Division of Haematology is involved in teaching undergraduate medical students. We are involved in formative training during medical students’ 2nd and 3rd years with lectures given during dedicated teaching modules that lays down their theoretical foundations in both normal physiology and disorders related to the haematological system. Guided clinical exposure is provided in their later years of internal medicine training. They rotate through our sub-specialist clinic where they are exposed to a wide array of haematological conditions and learn the basics of management prior to their internship years.

Postgraduate Offering

Postgraduate training includes a structured three-month rotational programme for physician registrars specializing in Internal Medicine. Clinical experience and teaching is gained through managing complex haematology patients under the supervision of trained subspecialists. Learning activities are also provided so that physicians complete their rotation with confidence when facing common haematological disorders. The Division actively supports research opportunities that facilitate academic advancement, including the pursuit of master's-level studies.

Our department additionally has an accredited Clinical Haematology fellowship programme. This is suited for specialists (including supernumeraries) who wish to continue their training and subspecialise in adult Clinical Haematology. A rigorous academic and practical programme in advanced clinical and applied laboratory haematology are integral components of this two-year fellowship program. Additionally, fellows are offered a dedicated transplant rotation at Groote Schuur Hospital so that they can offer this vital service in their own future practice. Fellowship candidates must also conduct independent research for an MPhil in haematology, culminating in writing a thesis suitable for a peer-reviewed publication. This programme provides a comprehensive framework that enables candidates to complete their training to the highest level of proficiency.
