About us

The Division of Clinical Haematology is part of the Department of Medicine, in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Stellenbosch University, Tygerberg Campus

The unit is a centre of haematology excellence engaged in comprehensive education, research, and clinical services to the state sector. We manage complex haematological malignancies as well as benign conditions.  This includes comprehensive care for people living with haemophilia.
Our clinical facilities are based at Tygerberg Hospital. We have a 28-bed in-patient service including an 8-bed special care unit with 4 isolation rooms for care of critical and vulnerable neutropenic patients.

Our outpatient service is located in the Gene Louw Oncology building (X-Block) where we consult with patients in dedicated subspecialist clinics. Additionally, we administer chemotherapy in conjunction with our experienced oncology nurses and specialised chemotherapy pharmacy.

The Division cultivates a culture of collaboration, teaching and learning, supporting excellence in both clinical care and research. Additionally, we are committed to bringing clinical trials to Tygerberg Hospital thereby allowing novel therapies access to patients within the state sector. Through integration of education, research, and service in a structured framework, we are committed to advancing haematology and delivering exceptional patient care at Tygerberg Hospital.
