SU libraries promoting research excellence
The Library and Information Service will be presenting its sixth Library Research Week from 30 July to 3 August 2018. This year, the theme is Research in Action.
Emerging Stellenbosch University (SU) researchers and students will be equipped with practical knowledge of research essentials, such as how to prepare a literature search strategy, write a research proposal, deal with copyright issues and manage research data.
According to Naomi Visser, Co-ordinator at the SU Library, the Research Week is there to help researchers and postgraduate students become better-equipped researchers. “The aim of Research Week is to develop the skills of young researchers and postgraduate students and to equip them with practical knowledge of research essentials. Young researchers often have questions regarding the research process, which their study leaders don't necessarily have the answers to, and during Research Week we try to get research experts to answer these questions."
For the first time, Tygerberg Campus will have its own version of Research Week in the brand-new Medicine and Health Sciences Library. “Ever since the first Research Week in 2013, students and staff from Tygerberg have asked for the duplication of some of the sessions at Tygerberg Campus, since it is not always possible for them to travel to Stellenbosch to attend Research Week here and they have the same needs as researchers on the main campus. We trust that this year we will be able to fulfil that need," says Visser.
Apart from research experts being at the Library Research Week, some of SU's suppliers and some support services will have kiosks in the SU Library and students and staff are encouraged to visit these kiosks. Some of the vendors who will be there are Juta (Law), Sabinet (South African journals), Springer Nature (academic publishing, databases and platforms), Elsevier (ScienceDirect, Scopus), WWIS (an agent for a number of databases, e.g. Web of Science), Ebsco Information Services, IRESS (a software company) and Emerald Publishing.
The following support services will also be available: the Centre for Student Counselling and Development, the Language Centre, Centre for Statistical Consultation, IT, Research Information, Postgraduate Skills Development, and the Centre for Statistical Analysis.
Most of the sessions will be presented in the e-classroom in the SU Library and, since seating capacity is limited, those wanting to attend are urged to book a seat before the sessions.
