Students host successful "Sandwich Day"

At Stellenbosch University, social impact is just as important as teaching and learning or research and innovation and students are encouraged to reach out to the community.

Jacky Dickason, the Faculty of Education's student committee member for community interaction explains wat the recent "Sandwich Day" was all about:

"Seeing as everyone in the Faculty of Education is studying to become teachers one day we deemed it highly appropriate to have all community projects associated with schools. This immediately creates that connection or common ground which is close to our hearts.

"Last year's Sandwich Day was a massive success and we decided to do it again this year. Our target was 200 sandwiches, which we would then donate to a local school in Idas Valley, Stellenbosch.

"We reached out to the students within the faculty as well as the broader community for their help and what a response we got! The Cell C branch in Claremont was very generous, donating apples and bananas as well as sandwich containers and a gazebo to use on the day. Inqua-Med sponsored hand-sanitising wash and latex gloves to ensure clean hands were used to prepare the sandwiches.

"All in all the day was a massive success with more than 400 sandwiches prepared and given to the learners. We would like to thank all the students and sponsors involved – without them this day would not have been possible. As Mahatma Ghandi said: "Be the change you wish to see in the world".
