As part of its 60th-anniversary celebrations, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is introducing 60 future healthcare professionals who are currently in their first year. Meet Rohan Hamman.

Rohan Hamman describes himself as a hard-working Christian who’s never afraid of a challenge. He loves the bushveld, his dad’s steak and chips, hunting, fishing and rugby, and if had R5 million, he would buy himself a small farm in the Karoo or the Bushveld.

But for now, Hamman is a resident in Huis Kerkenberg and nearing the end of his first year of study towards his MB,ChB degree.

In ten years’ time, he hopes to work with Doctors without Borders (MSF) as a qualified physician in rural areas, but his dream job is running his own hospital in rural Namibia.

“I love helping others,” he says when asked about his best trait. Hamman strives to live life to it’s fullest and his motto is a simple quote from American author Natalie Babbitt: “Do not fear death, but rather the unlived life.”

In a nutshell:

  • Who or what motivates you? “My sister. She taught me that you are in control of your own destiny.”
  • Last book read? “Recce by Koos Stadler.”
  • Best tip for staying in shape? “Exercise because it’s fun to do, not because you have to.”
  • Who would you describe as successful? “Any person who is satisfied with what he does and who can make a difference in society.”
  • Hidden talent? “I write songs from time to time.”
  • Can you cook ? “I can braai a mean steak.”
