‘MBA motivates you to constantly question the status quo’

During the rollercoaster of the first MBA block I came to the realisation that I know nothing. There is a certain sense of exhilaration when someone opens up a whole world of knowledge that you didn't even know existed a week ago. My fellow MBA classmates described the feeling over lunch as follows: 'It feels as if someone is breaking open your mind.'

I come from a creative design background (we architects tend to refer to ourselves as artists).  Therefore, I was afraid that an MBA programme would centre on finance and business, with little focus on innovation –  that thing that keeps creatives like me alive. I was wrong on so many levels. A golden thread is running throughout the modules, begging one to constantly question the status quo. I have come to learn that new ideas are the brain food in anything, from leadership to accounting.

Furthermore, the programme is tailored to be applicable in a wide range of disciplines – as seen through the diverse industries and cultures represented in our class.

In the end it seems that the MBA programme is ultimately what you make of it. You can sit in class because your company sent you and you have to finish this, or you will realise the immense effect that this programme will have on your life. Only on the latter will you devour the waves of knowledge that will be thrown at you.

Don't be fooled in thinking that this MBA is a walk in the park. Be warned, this is not for the faint hearted and will entail blood, sweat, weekends and late nights. To quote the Jedi Master: "Do or do not, there is no try."
