25 June 2021

The Division for Research Development at Stellenbosch University (SU) has launched a booklet on SU's research chairs and Centres of Excellence in June 2021.

The booklet aims to provide a snapshot of the focus areas and activities of the different research chairs and centres of excellence hosted at SU. It showcases the diversity of SU's research expertise and unique strengths that exists within collaborative research initiatives that are well developed and contribute significantly to SU's international visibility, uniqueness, and competitive advantage. In these areas, SU has unique expertise and critical mass to undertake cutting-edge research and train postgraduate students. A significant number of these areas are associated with our current Research Chairs and Centres of Excellence.

"Our research chairs and centres of excellence give us the opportunity to vigorously pursue research excellence and to develop local and global capacity even further. It allows for the development of SU as a leader on the African continent and as a preferred knowledge partner", explains Maryke Hunter-Hüsselmann, Director: Research Information and Strategy at SU.

The University currently hosts 47 research chairs, of which 28 are within the South African Research Chair Initiative (SARChI), funded by the Department of Science and Innovation, through the National Research Foundation. It also boasts seven Centres of Excellence.
