The Council of Stellenbosch University has appointed a one person Commission of Enquiry to investigate the process followed with regard to the recent implementation of the language policy and to make findings on whether deviations from the approved Policy, Plan and Specifications occurred and, if so, how they occurred and to make appropriate recommendations to Council.

Retired Appellate Justice Craig Howie has been appointed as the commissioner.

The Commission of Enquiry will commence sitting on Tuesday, 29 March 2016.

The Chair of Council, Mr George Steyn, appeals to the media and the public to afford Justice Howie every opportunity to complete his investigation in order for delivery of his report by 8 April 2016 and therefore to accept that he will not be available for media enquiries and/or interviews.
