Ms Bertina Engelbrecht, the Clicks Group Chief Executive Officer, has been appointed* as a member of the Council of Stellenbosch University (SU).

Engelbrecht will serve on Council from 1 September 2023 to August 2027.

Dr Nicky Newton-King, Chair of Council, says that “it is a privilege to have someone of Bertina's calibre join the Stellenbosch University Council. We are looking forward to her expert contributions on matters ranging from human capital development to management, sustainability and stakeholder engagement, amongst others."

Says Engelbrecht: “I am excited at the prospect of joining the Stellenbosch University Council and working collaboratively with my fellow council members to meaningfully contribute to the sustained success of the University."

Engelbrecht studied law at the Universities of the Western Cape and Cape Town and completed a Management Development Programme at the Stellenbosch Business School. She was admitted as an attorney of the Supreme Court of South Africa in 1989. She has occupied senior management and leadership positions in a diverse group of companies. After serving as Group Corporate Affairs Director and Group HR Director of the Clicks Group, she was appointed as Group CEO in January 2022 – the first black woman to lead a listed retail group in South Africa.

* Two Council members are appointed by Council, while the rest are representatives of various University stakeholders such as the Convocation, donors, Senate, those appointed by the Minister of Higher Education and the Student Representative Council.
