2019 Scholarship of Educational Leadership (SoEL short course)

On 1 February 2019 the first contact session for the new cohort of SoEL participants took place in Den Bosch. Dr Antoinette van der Merwe (Senior Director: Learning and Teaching Enhancement) welcomed the eleven participants: Proffs Maret du Toit (AgriScience), Faadiel Essop (Science), Pieter Fourie (FASS), Trevor Haas (Engineering), Ada Jansen (EMS); Mary-Ann Plaatjies van Huffel (Theology) and Drs Karin Baatjes (FMHS), Lorna Dreyer (Education), Michelle Nel (Military Science), Kabelo Sebolai (Language Centre) and Sonja Strydom (CLT).

The 12 credit Scholarship of Educational Leadership (SoEL) short course is presented annually and focuses on leadership of teaching for student learning. The course encompasses 4 themes: Contextualising Educational Leadership; Researching Educational Leadership; Curriculum- and Pedagogical Leadership and aims to build a critical mass of education leaders at SU. A blended learning model was used for the design of the short course. Participants have to complete a mini-portfolio of Educational Leadership and undertake small scale educational research projects. They have to present their research at the annual Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) conference and prepare a draft manuscript for a journal of their choice.
