Anaesthesiology & Critical Care

The Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care at Stellenbosch University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is dedicated to providing excellent teaching, learning and research methodologies to advancing the field of perioperative medicine. We offer a comprehensive academic programme that combines scientific knowledge with practical experience, preparing students to become leaders in anaesthesia and critical care. 

We are committed to responsible and scientific patient care by adhering to known scientific principles and continuing research. The department places a high premium on the development of critical judgement in under- and postgraduate students.  We are also intensely involved with the total operating room activity and perioperative patient care at Tygerberg Hospital, in all surgical disciplines. We have a well-established track record in Surgical Intensive Care at Tygerberg Hospital, as well as in the formal academic programme and research in Critical Care.

Our programmes

UNDERGRADUATE

This programme equips students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to confidently provide safe anaesthetic care. Students gain comprehensive training in all aspects of anaesthesia.

ANAESTHETIC NURSES’ COURSE

Our Anaesthetic Nurses' Course is a 10- to 12-week in-house training programme for nurses working in a theatre environment. It equips them with the knowledge and skills to confidently assist anaesthesiologists and improve patient safety.

ELECTIVE STUDENT PROGRAMME

The Elective Student Programme offers students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a diverse clinical setting. Students actively participate in perioperative patient care, develop clinical and technical skills and rotate through various surgical specialities at the largest hospital in the Western Cape.

POSTGRADUATE

This challenging and rewarding programme equips postgraduate students with the in-depth knowledge, advanced skills and leadership qualities necessary to excel in the evolving field of anaesthesiology and contribute to world-class patient care.

CRITICAL CARE SUB-SPECIALITY TRAINING

The Department's Critical Care sub-speciality training program provides expert mentorship and broad clinical exposure, allowing specialists to develop advanced skills and become leaders in Critical Care.
