  • The bursary recipients share a deep commitment to social impact and public service.

In 2024, the SU Law Trust established the Prestige Bursary to reinforce our commitment to an excellent and diverse student body. Awarded to two incoming first-year students, this bursary supports them for the duration of their law studies.

We are proud to introduce the 2026 recipients of the bursary, Jeanné Izzett and Imran Vally.

Meet Jeanné Izzett, from Cape Town

Jeanné Izzet

Why did you choose law?

“I chose law because I want to make a difference in the world. Because I am passionate about policies and politics. I want to study law because I believe in education and because the field deserves people with integrity, compassion, and determination. I want to study law because I believe in our Constitution. Because I believe in South Africa.”

Why did you choose the SU Faculty of Law?

“I chose the SU faculty of law as I believe the faculty's values and aims align with what I want to get out of law. I appreciate that the faculty and its curriculum have evolved as the world and law is similarly ever changing. I also loved the Stellenbosch atmosphere and community. I love that it is a student town and almost everywhere is walkable.”

What are you looking forward to this year?

“I am most looking forward to immersing myself in the university experience. I cannot wait to start classes and learn about the law, economics and even financial accounting. I am looking forward to walking to class, getting coffee with friends in the morning and bonding with my fellow law students and Ireners. I also look forward to joining clubs and societies, to meet new people, and make friends I know will last a lifetime.”

Meet Imran Vally, from Durban

Imran Vally, Prestige Bursary Recipient

Why did you choose law?

“I started to develop a strong passion for public speaking and debating right from my primary school years, eventually ending high school with a rather successful speaking career representing my city of Durban, my province of KwaZulu Natal and even South Africa multiple times. It was within these experiences that my passion for justice was fostered. Often tackling pertinent issues, I was drawn towards the study of law due to the unique and profound impact the field has on the lives of every person, and it feels like the natural choice for me.”

Why did you choose the SU Faculty of Law?

“Stellenbosch’s Faculty of Law was always my top choice, due to its prestigious status, abundant student opportunities and law societies.”

What are you looking forward to this year?

“With so many opportunities, I am most looking forward to finding opportunities to apply my anticipated legal education to make an impact on the lives of those in need through initiatives such as the Stellenbosch Law Clinic and the Students for law and Social Justice Society. Ultimately, I am most eager to make my time at Stellenbosch both meaningful and significant.”
