Biography

Theo Broodryk is a Professor and Manager of the Law Clinic. He is an NRF Y1-rated researcher. He completed his postgraduate LLB degree at the Faculty in 2008. He commenced his articles of clerkship at Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs Inc. in 2009, where he also practised as an attorney until September 2012. Professor Broodryk was awarded the Doctor of Laws degree for his thesis, titled “Developing a Structure for the Adjudication of Class Actions in South Africa”. He is responsible for lecturing Civil Procedure and Legal Skills. Professor Broodryk was the recipient of the SU Rector’s Award for outstanding work performance in 2015; he was awarded research funding by HB & MJ Thom in the same year. In 2018, he was awarded the Beaufort (Colenso) Scholarship for research at St John’s College, Cambridge University, Michaelmas Term 2019. He was also the recipient of the NRF Knowledge Interchange and Collaboration funding award in 2018. He was a visiting Scholar at Stanford Law School, Stanford University, in 2016; in the same year, he was recognised by Stellenbosch University as part of the group of approximately 40 researchers within the University who made the biggest contribution in terms of accredited scientific publications. In 2020, He was awarded the prestigious Georg Forster Fellowship Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany. He has published widely, and authored a widely used book, Eckard’s Principles of Civil Procedure in the Magistrates’ Court (6th ed (Juta), in 2018.
