SU Rector receives honorary degree from prestigious UK university
Prof Wim de Villiers, Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University (SU), received an honorary degree today (Monday 21 November 2016) from Coventry University in the UK. The degree Doctor of Science, honoris causa, was bestowed on him in recognition of his academic leadership and his work as doctor and researcher in medical science.
Coventry University said in a statement that Prof De Villiers' vision for SU is similar to that of Coventry, which has resulted in links between the two universities in peace and reconciliation, enterprise, agro-ecology and water and health. His background as a doctor and researcher has also seen a growth in a shared interest to transform research and teaching in these areas at both universities.
"I feel honoured to receive this degree from Coventry. It is also a reflection of the growing links between our two universities, and as such it is recognition for the good work being done at both institutions to promote academic excellence in service of our stakeholders. Both institutions are committed to bringing about meaningful societal change.
Prof John Latham, Vice-Chancellor of Coventry University, said they are delighted to recognise the hard work and dedication of exceptional individuals.
"They're an inspiration to our students and graduands."
