Two Stellenbosch University (SU) students have found a way to tackle food insecurity, support local food vendors, and improve access to affordable meals — all while celebrating South African heritage — through a single delivery app.
Tsundzuka Mnisi (3rd year BCom Management Accounting) and David Mwangi (4th year BEng Data Engineering) realised late last year that many students struggled to find affordable, homestyle meals they actually enjoy.
So, the duo decided to develop an online delivery application that would connect campus food vendors with students. However, rather than replicating existing food delivery options, Stellieskos aims to promote healthy eating at a fair price. “We are trying to move away from fast food. We want to offer access to proper food like students would eat at home. Everyone should have access to the food they know,” explains Mnisi.
He says outlets in the Neelsie Student Centre and nearby in town already offer various types of food that appeal to students. The trick now is to make it easier for students, irrespective of their budgets, to order from these vendors. “Many students cannot afford to order from existing delivery apps.” This is why there are no onboarding fees to sign up for Stellieskos. Its artificial intelligence (AI) feature finds the best food at the most affordable price.
Mnisi, who hails from Limpopo, says he has seen first-hand how many students struggle to afford food. He witnessed a friend struggle with food insecurity and still graduate. “He was fighting different battles while we were studying. Many of us in residence had guaranteed meals, but he never knew when his next one would come. No one should have to go through that.”
More for less
Stellieskos therefore includes a Kos for Less initiative offering 30% to 100% discounts on meals or under-R45 end-of-day options. Stellieskos has also recently connected with SU's social impact initiatives and is planning to meet soon to explore how the app can support their work in reaching a wider network of students in need.
Beyond supporting students, Stellieskos also uplifts small businesses. A partnership with local e-bike delivery service Hendrikse Deliveries creates jobs while ensuring fast, eco-friendly food delivery.
Stellieskos ticks many boxes: food insecurity, sustainability, job creation and innovation to name but a few. Although still in the Beta testing phase, the app is scheduled to go live in the near future.
Mnisi says they are looking for collaborators to amplify their reach. “We are looking for sponsorships to sponsor food vouchers or expand our network of vendors.” Stellieskos relies on social media, and its vibrant mascot who attends events on campus, to reach students.
