A day in the life: Mantombi Makhubele
As we kicked off May commemorating Workers’ Day, we dedicate this series of articles to our staff and their important contribution to the University. In the interview below, Mantombi Makhubele tells us more about her work. As senior content producer, Makhubele is tasked with telling the Stellenbosch Business School brand story in order to grow the institution’s reputation and to connect with students, alumni and stakeholders. Explain your role at SU, please?I am a Senior Content Producer at Stellenbosch Business School. As a content producer I work with a combination of different communications disciplines. We use short and long form articles, pictures, videos and other forms of media to tell stories in a creative way by creating content for our different communications channels like social media, website events, and newsletters. I work with our public relations (PR) agency to facilitate content that we send out to mainstream media. I also work closely with our digital marketer to create content which we pay for to promote our programmes and then with our enrolments team to communicate with prospective students at different phases of the enrolment cycle. During big events like graduation, we mainly use social media to keep our stakeholders informed. What does a typical day at work look like?I work with a very talented team consisting of a copywriter, graphic designer, photographer/videographer and events coordinators. We normally brainstorm story ideas with our PR agency, sometimes we get stories from the student coordinators, and we also follow the Stellenbosch Business School strategy to create content which aligns with the strategic pillars. We also create content with our faculty members especially when we want to communicate with our students about our different programmes. So, a typical day involves me choosing the story we are telling for the day and how it aligns to our overall brand story. We organise either a photo shoot, an article or a video depending on what tools we feel will best tell the story. How did your education or past experiences prepare you for this role? I studied marketing and then later went on to do a Master’s degree in Journalism. My research was on whether lifestyle journalism is a hidden form of free advertising. Having worked as a marketer and as a journalist I am able to put together stories that promote our brand narrative without it feeling like we are selling our stakeholders something. I worked for the Sunday Times and Sunday Independent as a journalist; and at the SABC as a news producer. I consulted in marketing, PR and communications for Brand South Africa and I consulted as a content creator for SA Tourism. What do you enjoy most about your role and working at SU?SU is a goldmine of beautiful stories of the people behind the brand. Every day, I interact with people from all walks of life who have contributed to building this beautiful brand. I enjoy interacting with our students - hearing their stories and how the Business School has impacted them. I enjoy listening to them talking about their favourite lecturers because to me they are my colleagues that I interact with in the office and I never see them in action in front of a classroom. It’s always interesting to hear the different perspectives about your colleagues. I also enjoyed working on our #ResponsibleLeadership campaign where we brought together students, faculty and a few members of our staff to give us their definition of responsible leadership. It was so interesting to hear the different views that make up our most important value.Tell us something exciting or interesting about yourself that few people would expect? I am a yogi. I am passionate about mind, body and soul alignment. I started practicing yoga in 2021 to regulate my nervous system to recover from the high pace of the newsroom. I fell in love with the concept using movement to quiet the mind. I am also not a fan of rigorous high impact exercises, so yoga has proved to be the best way of staying fit in body, mind and soul. I practise yoga four times a week.
