Open Day comes ‘home’ to the Department of Journalism
- New Venue: The Journalism Department hosted its first independent Open Day at its Crozier Street building, featuring student work displays and building tours.
- Alumni Participation: Several successful alumni returned to share career insights with prospective students, an initiative the Department Chair hailed as a success.
For the first time since the institution of Open Day at Stellenbosch University, the Department of Journalism opened its own building at 26 Crozier Street for learners and their parents. The event boasted information sessions with young alumni and building tours by current journalism honours students.
In the past, the Department had an information booth with the other departments in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) building. This change was part of an overall rebranding and reimagining of the FASS Open Day– led by Vicky Davis, Artistic Manager: Planning and Communication in the Department of Music.
The Department of Journalism showcased the work of students over the years, including copies of the Stellenbosch Media Forum magazine and snippets from their video documentaries. Various former students also shared their thoughts on the value of a Social Sciences degree.
A handful of alumni also returned to the Department to share their career journeys and talk about the value of their studies. A big thanks goes out to alumni Victoria O’Regan, Tamsin Metelerkamp, Daniel Roodt, Joel Ontong, Tim Malinzi, Lucian van Wyk and Thameenah Daniels who travelled from far and wide back to 26 Crozier Street to share their thoughts with the visitors to the Department.
Dr Marenet Jordaan, Chair of the Department, says the success of this first home-based Open Day event bodes well for future engagements with young people interested in studying in the Department.
