Auditions and Interviews

Stellenbosch University Drama Department

To be considered for Stellenbosch University’s Drama Department, you must come to Stellenbosch for an in-person audition or interview. 

Auditions for 2027 will be held in batches. 

Audition/Interview dates for 2027

  • Batch 1: 14 and 15 August 2026
  • Batch 2: 18 and 19 September 2026 

No virtual auditions are allowed. 

After You’ve Applied

You will receive an e-mail from the Drama Department approximately three weeks prior to your assigned batch. 

This e-mail will ask you to provide some personal information and select a timeslot for your Audition (Performance stream) or Interview (Technical and Management Training stream). 

Technical and Management Training applicants will also be required to fill in a short questionnaire which will be provided by e-mail. 

Auditions (Performance)

On The Day

  • The audition process is divided into two segments:
    • Individual Prepared Material
    • Unprepared Group Activities
  • Candidates will be allocated to specific groups, each proceeding to distinct venues to complete the two audition stages.
  • Various panels, composed of three staff members each, will assess each candidate’s individual audition.
  • After the individual auditions conclude, all participants will engage in guided group activities.
  • Candidates from a particular group are free to leave after the group activities.
  • The entire audition process takes approximately two-and-a-half hours. 

What to Prepare for Your Audition

You are required to prepare TWO pieces for your audition.

  • A 2-minute Monologue OR a 2-minute Prose excerpt

                                         AND

  • A Poem not exceeding 2 minutes.

    No self-written pieces. 

Language Consideration

  • One of your pieces MUST be presented in English.
  • Your second piece can be either in English or another language (such as Afrikaans, isiXhosa, etc.). 

Showcasing Additional Talents

  • If you wish to exhibit other talents, such as singing, dancing, or playing a musical instrument (maximum of 2 minutes), you are welcome to do so. 

 

Additional Points to Note

  • Candidates who do not adequately prepare both pieces will regrettably be disqualified.
  • Kindly dress in comfortable attire in which you can move, preferably in black.
  • All candidates must arrive at the drama department 20 minutes prior to their designated timeslot (located at the corner of Andringa and Crozier Street, Stellenbosch). Note that parking spaces are limited in town, so allocate enough time to find a suitable parking spot.
  • The decision by the panel is final, and no correspondence will be entered into.

Interviews (Technical and Management Training)

  • The interviews for Technical and Management Training will take place in-person at the Drama Department of Stellenbosch University.
  • Different panels, consisting of 2 staff members each, will facilitate the interviews of the respective candidates.
  • Each session (3 candidates max.) is 30 minutes long.
  • You may also be required to do a short practical exercise to illustrate your potential for the course. The instructions for this will be provided during your slot.
  • After your slot, you are free to leave.
