The winners of the Young Economist of the Year competition is a talented team of Stellenbosch University (SU).

Ashley Williamson and Kay-Dee Adams, who entered the competition as Economisticated, came out on top in this popular competition for first-year economics students.

The names of the winners were recently announced at a function at the Media24 Centre in Cape Town.

Students from SU, the University of the Western Cape (UWC), the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the Military Academy in Saldanha entered for the competition, which is held annually by SU and sponsored by Die Burger.

Teams comprising two to four students could enter. The goal of the competition is for students to try their hand at forecasting economic developments as accurately as possible by monitoring movements in key variables: the economic growth rate, inflation, interest rates and exchange rates.
