Mr Tienie Petersen, the President of Tygerberg Sport, was included in the Parliamentary rugby team which represented South Africa at the Parliamentary Rugby World Cup tournament, held in London last year.

This tournament normally precedes the official Rugby World Cup Tournament and this year 300 politicians represented their respective Parliaments. Among the participating countries were England, Ireland, France, Japan, Wales, Australia and New Zealand.

In their first game, the South African team overwhelmed the Whelsh team with a victory of 64 – 0. They went on to beat England with a final score of 17 – 0. They were beaten by the Australians in the final game.

Petersen has been playing for the South African Parliamentary team for the past three years. This team also participates in club tournaments in the age group of 35 and older.

“I was very excited to be included in the World Cup team, because I could represent South Africa in my favourite sport. I have played indoor cricket for the Western Province and South African teams before, but this was definitely the highlight of my sporting career,” Petersen said.

Teams are entitled to include four players who are not employed by Parliament. “I am honoured to be one of the four chosen men, but I believe it is because I am a dedicated player who is present at every practice and game,” Petersen said. “And of course one has to be able to play rugby,” he added wryly.
