Toasties for Tummies
Stellenbosch University (SU) is gearing up to make 10 000 sandwiches at the upcoming Toasties for Tummies event, which will take place in the Neelsie – top floor – on Stellenbosch Campus on 27 July 2018.
Michelle Pietersen, Project Manager at the SU Division for Social Impact, said that the event will start at 10:00 and finish at 13:40; there will be 20-minute breaks in between for the volunteers to clear up for their next sessions.
The event, organised by the student society Golden Key, is an annual SU thing, started not only to feed the less fortunate but also to help community feeding schemes and save them a day's food.
“This day is also an opportunity for staff and students to network and socialise outside of the lecture rooms. People might wonder what a difference a sandwich makes to one's life but would be surprised at how much it matters to the beneficiaries," said Michelle.
Michelle added that they, as the Division for Social Impact, have tried to make an event out of this year's Toasties for Tummies by inviting celebrity MC Wayne Mckay, who is well known in the entertainment industry as a stand-up comedian, actor, radio and television voiceover artist.
Zabby Samsoedien, who is the owner of the company that has been supplying the initiative with French polony for over three years, said, “This is definitely not the last time we are working with Stellenbosch University. We have a good track record and all our products have been cleared and marked as safe to eat."
Golden Key will be handling all the technicalities, including parking and transportation for the beneficiaries. Michelle concluded by saying that they will also be handing out 100 comfort packs on the day.
Organisations that will benefit from the 2018 Toasties for Tummies include Love to Give, Child Welfare, Feeding in Action, the Kylemore Charity Foundation, the New Life Community Project, the New Superman, the Ark, the Kuyasa Youth Programme and the Night Shelter.
