Registration for the 2016 academic year is set to continue on Thursday despite an attempt to disrupt the registration process at Stellenbosch University (SU) this afternoon (Wednesday 27 January). Contingency plans are in place to ensure that the registration process continues.

A group of about eight to ten students made their way into the Admin A Building at about 14:45 this afternoon as part of a protest action. The group was protesting the issue of fees payment.

The group did not disrupt the registration process but did intimidate other students trying to make payments.

Staff members of the Centre for Student Communities engaged the group and at 16:30 the students left the building on their own accord.

The University made it clear that the safety of students and staff and the protection of property are non-negotiable and that the institution will do everything possible to make sure that the welcoming and registration process takes place without disruption.

The University acknowledges the right of staff and students to take part in protest action, provided that academic and administrative activities are not disrupted; that the rights of fellow students to study are not infringed upon; and that protesters do not engage in criminal acts such as damaging property, intimidation or injuring other people.

In this regard, the University will not hesitate to act against students who disrupt the registration process or any other administrative or academic activity.

Staff members in the Bursaries and Loans division are committed to assist students to ensure that financial challenges do not form a barrier to academic success.
