Maties Rugby ready for Varsity Cup

Maties Sport Media
26 January 2017

It's been longer than any supporter of Maties Rugby would like to admit since the last time Maties won the coveted Varsity Cup title.

Maties won the first three tournaments – 2008, 2009 and 2010 - and played in the final three times (2012, 2013 and 2016).  Last year Maties lost in the final at home against Pukke.

The first match of this year's tournament will be against Tuks in Pretoria on Monday 30 January.

Maties fullback Craig Barry, who was named backline player of the Varsity Cup last year, will be playing in his fifth Varsity Cup this year.

"We obviously really want to win the Varsity Cup, but our goal is also to make a difference. The hard work and hours of grafting on the field will hopefully result in the kind of rugby that people enjoy to watch and that will make them come back for more. We want our supporters to feel part of it all. Our team's biggest value is: 'It is bigger than us'. We are working really hard and hope to make it one step further this year…not just for us, but for all everyone who has been supporting us so passionately over the years!"

One of the players who made a big impact in his first season for Maties, Edwill van der Merwe, is itching to get going in his second Varsity Cap for the Maroon Machine.

"I am looking forward to get back on the field for Maties. But first things first. My spot in the team is not a certainty and we have some good depth this year, so I am working hard in training to make sure I get my chance. Wearing the maroon jersey again will be a huge privilege and I will give my best. Playing for Maties is like playing with your best friends. And I also can't wait to see the crowd at our first home game at the Danie Craven stadium!"

Maties' first home game is on 6 February against Wits.

Tickets are available on www.webtickets.co.za or can be bought at the Coetzenburg Club at the Danie Craven stadium from Monday 30 January to Friday 3 February between 09:00 and 16:00. Season tickets are R150 for the open stand (unreserved), R200 for the grandstand (unreserved) and R250 for the grandstand (reserved).
