Accomplished academic Prof Lis Lange has been appointed at Stellenbosch University (SU) as Special Advisor to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC): Learning and Teaching, Prof Deresh Ramjugernath.

The position has been created to drive academic renewal at the University. “Professor Lange, an accomplished academic and a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning, has a wealth of knowledge and experience in this field," said Ramjugernath.

Lange was Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic at the University of the Free State before she was appointed in 2018 as Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning at the University of Cape Town.

She holds a BA (Hons) in History from the University of Buenos Aires, an MA in African Studies from El Colegio de Mexico and a PhD in History from the University of the Witwatersrand. Much of her research focuses on transformation in higher education, particularly at a curricular level.

Of her appointment, Lange said she is familiarising herself with the complexities of the learning and teaching portfolio, as well as SU's learning and teaching strategy. “In terms of priorities, academic renewal is the most important and urgent of the tasks ahead. I am therefore delighted to have been invited to be part of the development of SU's response to the Khampepe Report, as this work intersects with the overall project of academic renewal and curriculum transformation."

Lange was recommended by a strategic recruitment agency for this specialised position. “I am confident that Prof Lange will greatly assist us in undertaking the transformation of teaching, learning and assessment as part of SU's academic renewal initiative," added Ramjugernath.
