  • Student-Led Support: AEPA is a student-driven initiative designed to combat isolation by fostering a supportive community focused on academic and professional growth.
  • Strategic Leadership: A dedicated seven-member committee manages diverse portfolios—from industry relations to skills development—to ensure postgraduate voices are heard and represented.
  • Industry Integration: Through events like the 2026 Speed Networking session, AEPA bridges the gap between academia and the agricultural sector, connecting students with major agribusinesses.

A growing sense of connection is taking shape within the Department of Agricultural Economics, led by the Agricultural Economics Postgraduate Association (AEPA), a student-driven initiative focused on enhancing the postgraduate experience.

AEPA was established to support and represent postgraduate students in agricultural economics, creating a space where academic development, professional growth, and community come together. Recognising that postgraduate studies can often feel isolating, the association fosters an environment where students feel connected, supported, and engaged.

Through its initiatives, AEPA bridges the gap between students' academic environment and the agricultural industry, creating opportunities for collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and professional growth.

At the heart of AEPA is a team of seven dedicated postgraduate students. Liesje Eigenhuis serves as Chairperson, leading AEPA with a clear vision and ensuring that the association remains active, aligned, and representative of postgraduate students. Supporting her in this role is Lathitha Ngwane, Vice Chairperson and Student Affairs representati ve, who champions student needs and ensures that postgraduate voices are heard. Liam Carolus fulfils the dual role of Secretary and Treasurer, managing administration and finances to ensure well-organised and sustainable initiatives. Isak Scott oversees Industry Relations, strengthening connections between AEPA and the industry to create opportunities for student exposure and growth. Luhle Skwatsha is responsible for Skills Development, focusing on preparing students for life beyond university by building both academic and career-ready skills. Estian Odendaal, as Events Coordinator, organises engaging events that bring students together and foster a sense of community. Finally, Refiloe Komana leads Marketing and Communications, driving AEPA’s visibility through strategic communication and the promotion of its initiatives. Together, the team ensures that AEPA remains relevant, responsive, and impactful within the postgraduate community.

The AEPA Team

AEPA’s first event of 2026 and annual highlight was the Speed Networking Event, hosted on 13 March 2026, which provided a dynamic platform for students to engage with industry leaders.

The event brought postgraduate students and leading agribusiness organisations together in a structured format of short, timed conversations, making it easy to connect, exchange ideas, and build relationships.

Students engaged with representatives from eight organisations: ABSA, KAL Group, the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, Agri Wes-Kaap, Value Chain Solutions, Perdigon, Netafim, and Bester. Gaining valuable insight into career pathways and real-world applications of their research. These interactions not only expanded students’ understanding of the field but also helped build meaningful professional networks.

The event highlighted the value of creating intentional platforms that connect postgraduate students with industry and support their transition into the professional world.

AEPA continues to build on this momentum, with plans to host more initiatives that strengthen the postgraduate experience. As the association grows, it remains committed to fostering connection, collaboration, and professional development.
