Mathematics Division
The Mathematics Division is part of the Department of Mathematical Sciences and has 23 members of academic staff, as well as a large cohort of postgraduate students.
Our research activities span a range of subject areas, including Combinatorics, Lattice Theory, Algebraic Number Theory, Arithmetic Algebraic Geometry, Algebra, Topology and Category Theory, Functional Analysis, Discrete Mathematics, Wavelets and Subdivision Analysis, Mathematical Finance, Mathematical Biology.
Several seminar groups are active with weekly meetings, as well as regular colloquium talks by visitors to the Department.
Our undergraduate programmes
BSc in Mathematical Sciences
This programme has three focal areas and allows students to choose from a range of fields in the mathematical sciences, including Applied Mathematics, Mathematics and Operations Research.
BSc (Focal area: Biomathematics)
Applied Mathematics in combination with Biochemistry or Biodiversity and Ecology, with postgraduate study possibilities in Mathematics, Biochemistry, Botany or Zoology.
BSc Computer Science
The BSc in Computer Science will equip you with extensive knowledge of Computer Science, including programming, computer systems, databases, networks, operating systems and concurrent programming.
Bachelor of Data Science
The BDatSci programme is an interdepartmental and interfaculty collaboration between Science, Economic and Management Sciences, AgriSciences and Arts and Social Sciences. The programme will give you a thorough grounding in all aspects of the data lifecycle, including data collection, processing, analysis, and visualisation. The faculty where you are registered, awards the degree.
Our postgraduate programmes
BSc Honours Mathematics
A BSc Honours is a one-year degree following a Bachelors degree. It provides a broadening of the fundamental mathematical basis developed in the undergraduate mathematics programme. There are two focal areas:
- BSc Honours Mathematics
- BSc Honours with focus in Biomathematics
