Department of Pathology

Preparing the next generation of industry experts

Pathology is the cornerstone of medical science, driving precise diagnoses and effective treatments. Our department unites experts in anatomical, chemical, forensic, haematological pathology, medical microbiology and virology, setting us apart as a leader in diagnostic excellence. Our close collaboration with the National Health Laboratory Service at Tygerberg Hospital has enabled us to pioneer digital pathology and advanced molecular diagnostics, rapidly identifying infectious agents and cancer biomarkers to improve patient outcomes.

We have developed innovative forensic protocols that enhance the accuracy of post-mortem investigations and made breakthrough contributions in haematological research that inform treatment strategies for blood disorders. By merging cutting-edge research with real-world diagnostic expertise, our department consistently makes a tangible impact on South Africa’s healthcare landscape.

Our divisions

Anatomical Pathology

This division focuses on disease study at the tissue level, offering diagnostic services, teaching and research. Students gain hands-on experience in histopathology, cytology and molecular pathology.

Forensic Medicine

A critical field that applies medical knowledge to legal investigations. Students learn how pathology contributes to the justice system, working with forensic experts in post-mortem examinations and medico-legal assessments.

Medical Microbiology

This programme examines infectious diseases, from bacterial and viral infections to antimicrobial resistance. Training includes diagnostic microbiology, infection control and immunological responses to pathogens.

Chemical Pathology

This division explores the biochemical changes in the body that indicate disease. It provides essential laboratory analysis, diagnosis and patient monitoring training, equipping students to work in clinical biochemistry.

Haematological Pathology

This programme focuses on blood-related diseases. It covers diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as anaemia, leukaemia and clotting disorders. Students also engage in laboratory techniques and research in blood pathology.

Medical Virology

This programme, which strongly links diagnostics and research, studies viruses that affect human health, including HIV, hepatitis and emerging infectious diseases. Students gain experience in molecular diagnostics and viral epidemiology.
