Statement of condolences: Abuse of Human Rights

Dr Munita Dunn-Coetzee
14 February 2017

As a Centre that proudly affirm the values of respecting and upholding human dignity and shared humanity, the Centre for Student Counselling and Development (CSCD) at Stellenbosch University is devastated at the loss of human life, human dignity, and callous disregard for human rights with the death of 94 humans who were under the state’s care. A society’s moral fibre is determined by its capacity to care and meet the basic needs of the vulnerable and defenceless, and we are saddened that these humans have been deprived the basic constitutionally granted rights to be fed, to be clean, to be safe, to be housed, and to live. The CSCD would like to extend its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the dearly departed.
