Lieutenant General Norman Yengeni and several high-ranking South African National Defence Force (SANDF) officials attended the parade. The Commandant, Brigadier General Lawrence Mbatha not only welcomed the first years to the unit, but reminded them that they are here to gain knowledge to become intelligent thought leaders who can make informed decisions in their careers. He also thanked Stellenbosch University (SU) for their remarkable partnership with the Academy, which ensures that the Academy remains a highly recognized institution in our country and is lauded as one of the top Military Academies in the world.

Each learner furthermore received the Military Academy Code of Honour to serve as a guideline for them to complete their studies successfully.

Professor Eugene Cloete, Vice Rector: Research, Innovation and Post-graduate Studies from SU was the guest speaker at the Academic Opening.

"A good leader must also have empathy to care for their people, they must serve the people that they lead by giving up some of their privileges and lastly have respect. In this university, part of what we do is we train thought leaders with the emphasis on thought," he said.

He encouraged the students to question everything, in order to stimulate their intellect.

"There is more to life than achieving your goals – if you help other people achieving their goals it will make you a significant person," Prof Cloete concluded.

The Military Academy wishes the intake of 2017 a prosperous three years and success in their studies.
