We started the year off with a bang! We are pleased to announce the winners of the SU FameLab heat that our Postgraduate Office co-ordinated in collaboration with Crest and Jive Media Africa last week Friday, 1 February. FameLab is one of the biggest science communication competitions in the world.
Seventeen contestants (represented by SU Master's students, doctoral scholars, postdoctoral fellows and early career academics) in the fields of maths, science, engineering, technology and innovation, battled it out last Friday by cleverly communicating their research in just 3 minutes!
Congratulations to all 17 contestants for bravely taking the stage and producing such high quality science communication messages. The overall winners were: 1st place, Matia Mukana (2nd from left in photo above); 1st runner up: Carla Snyman (4th from the left in photo above); 2nd runner up: George Teke (5th from the left in photo above). The audience vote for most popular talk went to Jurgen Kriel (5th from the right in the photo above).
As a Food Science doctoral scholar, Matia talked about his innovative pomegranate packaging. By presenting his research impactfully and winning this heat, he has won all expenses paid science communication master class training and all expenses paid trip to the National Final. The winner of the National final will travel all expenses paid to the international master classes and final at Cheltenham Science Festival in the UK later this year!
