"PAINTING AT THE STELLENBOSCH WORK CENTRE"
INFORMATION
The Mission
The Stellenbosch Work Centre for Adults with Disabilities focuses on the economic empowerment and social integration of adults with disabilities in the Stellenbosch and surrounding areas. This Work Centre was established by Stellenbosch University (Matie Community Service) 25 years ago.
The Centre has been providing empowerment and developmental programmes to persons with intellectual, mental and/or physical impairment between the ages of 18 and 55 years.
The programme entails work rehabilitation to improve and develop labour capacity and potential as well as increasing the level of independence and self-worth. The work itself encompasses labour-intensive activities for the making of items required by commercial enterprises and organs of state. Ultimately the Centre hopes to instil a level of competence that will enable the person to find other work opportunities in the open labour market, earn better and achieve a higher standard of living.
The second and complementary program aims at integrating the person into community life through life and work skills training and participation in organized sport and general recreational activities
The objective of the Organisation
The provision of a work rehabilitation program to improve and maintain the fulfilment of a worker's role that brings meaning, purpose, order and rhythm into the life of persons with disabilities.
This interior paining volunteer opportunity is open to all Stellenbosch University staff in hourly slots.

Staff members will be providing comfort packs to all patients in Tygerberg Hospital, as well as to the mothers in the paediatric ward, staying with their children.

As a gesture of appreciation, students would like to acknowledge the work, time and effort which nursing staff invest in the student's professional development. A small "gift" with a personalized message, will be handed to nurses in the hospital on 19th July to thank them for the role they play in the personal and professional development of our students.
