The Centre for Student Recruitment and Career Advice (CSR) commits to facilitating access to opportunities in the Higher Education sector. In response to this, the CSR team hosted 350 grade 12 learners from Leap 1, Leap 2 and Kutlwanong at the annual SU Open Day on 29 February 2020. The Open Day aims to offer learners valuable information; to explore various career paths; and equip them to make informed career decisions.

Kutlwanong is a non-profit organisation which provides programmes for grades 10 to 12 learners. It aims to improve performance in mathematics and science in township and rural schools. The Leap schools also focus on teaching mathematics and science. Stellenbosch University is partnering with the Leap schools and Kutlwanong to provide them with ongoing support for career planning and admission.

At the Open Day, the learners were exposed to various study opportunities in mathematics and science related fields. They visited exhibition stations to learn more about the academic offering and admission requirements at SU. The exhibitions represented the Faculty of Engineering, Science, Agriscience, Medicine and Health Science and Commerce. They also attended specialised talks on food science, animal science, geo-informatics or computer science and data science.

Some learners said, they were amazed by the university's environment. SU was now their first choice university. They were inspired by the university's research and innovation, and motivated to work hard. Other's said that they walked away knowing what their next step should be and the experience helped them to make more informed career decisions.

Should any faculty or department plan on hosting school groups on campus, we would gladly partner with you to ensure that they have as memorable time whilst visiting campus. Contact 0218084709 / [email protected].
