The Science of Food Packaging

The annual IPSA student Gold Pack awards evening was held  in December 2016 at D'Aria Wine Estate Durbanville.

SAAFoST, (the South African Association for Food Science & Technology), sponsored IPSA's Food Science & technology category of the competition. In this category, students were recognised for their keen understanding of packaging materials and their suitability for specific food products.

The 3 winners were all from Stellenbosch University, Food Science and they entered the packaging projects they had designed for their first semester product development products.

Stephanie  du Toit received gold for the packaging of her product 'Yogi Burst', (yoghurt spheres with hidden raspberry centres in an easy-to -separate  six-tub pack). Judges made special mention of the attractive branding and upmarket convenience.

Emma Phillips won the silver medal for her vibrant and colourful packaging for 'Torteinos', Maize Protein Chip packs.  The judges praised the excellent graphics, excellent project as well as well- constructed mock-ups.

Philippa Grylls walked away with bronze for her strip pack of 5 savoury waffles made from chickpeas, spinach & basil named WaFill². Her well-researched report impressed the judges.

Prof Marena Manley, their lecturer for this module  and Prof Gunnar Sigge accompanied them to the awards evening.
