
Arrests made in Lydia assault case
Update Friday 7 April:Smart detective work by investigators of the Stellenbosch University Campus Security led to the arrest of three suspects who are linked to assaulting a female student at the Lydia Residence on Tuesday night (4 April). The suspects were arrested Thursday morning (6 April). The officials followed up on several leads including CCTV footage, statements by witnesses and vehicle identification. The information was handed over to the SAPS who made the arrests.An unidentified man unsuccessfully attempted to rob the student of her cell phone and laptop. She was however stabbed in the chest with a sharp object.The vehicle used by the suspects, was identified as a vehicle of another SU student who was reported missing to Campus Security on Wednesday. The student has since been found.Original article - Wednesday 5 April:The Stellenbosch University (SU) community learnt with concern of an incident last night (Tuesday 4 April 2017) in which an unidentified man unsuccessfully attempted to rob a female student of her cell phone and laptop in front of the Lydia Residence at around 22:00. The student, a Lydia resident, was stabbed in her chest. The man fled in a car that was parked in the street. Campus Security reacted swiftly and gave the necessary support.She was discharged from hospital early this morning (Wednesday 5 April) after being treated for her injuries. She was supported by her mother, fellow residents, friends, Counselling Services and members of the Student Representative Council. Counselling was offered to the student and the Residence as a whole.The safety of students and staff is and remains a priority for the SU Management and Campus Security's Mobile Reaction Unit will now adapt their current strategies in line with the events of last night.Counselling to students is available via the Crisis Service at 082 557 0880.
