Stellenbosch University Chamber Choir (SUCC)
A Dynamic Ensemble of Students and Alumni
Who We Are
The Stellenbosch University Chamber Choir (SUCC) is a vibrant and diverse ensemble made up primarily of students and alumni from Stellenbosch University’s Music Department, alongside enthusiastic non-music students. Founded in 2014 by Dr. Martin Berger and currently co-directed with African choral music expert Mr. Lunathi Ncamani, SUCC is celebrated for its artistic excellence, emotional depth, and inclusive spirit. Our choir reflects a commitment to both musical innovation and cultural diversity, bringing together voices from many backgrounds and musical traditions.
Our Purpose
SUCC exists as a premier platform for advanced choral performance and conductor training within the Choral Conducting Division. The choir offers students and emerging conductors a professional-level ensemble in which to hone their skills and broaden their artistic horizons. Beyond conductor training, SUCC provides all its singers with exceptional vocal coaching and musical guidance. Under the expert leadership of Dr. Berger and Mr. Ncamani, choir members develop and refine their vocal and choral skills within a professional choir setting. The repertoire is carefully chosen to challenge singers and is performed at a high artistic standard. Through its programming and community engagement, SUCC also serves to inspire audiences and foster cross-cultural dialogue within and beyond the university community.
Our Musical Focus
SUCC’s repertoire is wide-ranging and adventurous. It embraces a rich variety of musical styles and traditions, with a special emphasis on African choral music alongside Western and Eastern classical works, sacred music, and contemporary compositions. This diverse programming reflects the choir’s mission to celebrate cultural plurality and to challenge singers and audiences alike with innovative and meaningful musical experiences.
Our Educational Role
As a key practical training ensemble for Stellenbosch University’s conducting students, SUCC provides conducting candidates with regular opportunities to lead rehearsals. This experience is essential for developing confident, adaptable conductors ready to work in varied musical settings. For all singers, the choir offers ongoing education in vocal technique, ensemble singing, and musicianship, guided by Dr. Berger and Mr. Ncamani’s combined expertise. This nurturing and professional environment helps singers to achieve their full potential. The choir’s collaborative atmosphere encourages artistic exploration, technical growth, and leadership development, preparing students for professional careers in music both locally and internationally.
Our Community and Values
SUCC prides itself on being an inclusive, welcoming community where singers and conductors develop lasting relationships grounded in shared passion and mutual respect. The choir values artistic integrity, innovation and creativity, cultural exchange and diversity, and teamwork. These values create a dynamic atmosphere that nurtures personal growth alongside musical excellence.
Leadership
Under the expert guidance of Dr. Martin Berger and Mr. Lunathi Ncamani, SUCC benefits from a leadership team with extensive international experience and deep knowledge of both Western choral traditions and African choral music. This combination enriches the choir’s artistic vision and educational mission.
In Summary
The Stellenbosch University Chamber Choir stands as a formidable ensemble known for its bold programming and outstanding musicianship that is also deeply rooted in the Choral Conducting Division. It plays a vital role in shaping the next generation of choral leaders, developing singers’ vocal and musical skills, and enriching the cultural fabric of Stellenbosch University and the wider community.
