Outdoor
The beauty of our University extends beyond buildings to enchanting outdoor spaces such as the Stellenbosch Mountain, SU Botanical Garden and Rooiplein. Green lungs provide peaceful retreats for study, relaxation and social gatherings.
Founded in 1902, the Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden (SUBG), located in the historic centre of Stellenbosch, is the oldest university botanical garden in South Africa. Though small, it is renowned for its rich diversity of indigenous and exotic plants, including rare and endangered species. The garden serves as both a tranquil public green space and an important academic resource, supporting research, teaching and conservation projects within the university. Visitors can explore themed collections such as indigenous fynbos, bonsai, succulents and medicinal plants, while enjoying the peaceful paths, ponds and shaded seating areas. Entrance is free for students and staff when presenting your staff or student card. The SUBG also boasts a gift shop, where you can find a unique gift for yourself or a loved one. The gift shop is open daily from 09:00 to 16:30. The Botanical Garden Restaurant is perfect for a relaxing bite or coffee, right in the middle of the garden's tranquil surroundings.
The Vergenoegd picnic area is situated next to the Eersterivier – which snakes through central Stellenbosch – near the suspension bridge. It is an ideal venue for picnics and braais/barbeques. There are large lawns and braai facilities.
