It is important to take note of the accredited private accommodation guidelines, which outline the responsibilities of students, the landlord, and the University. Please ensure that you read the guidelines available here.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS
- It is important to secure private accommodation as soon as possible.
- Prospective students who applied for university residences will be informed by the end of October, and current students by the end of August of the residence application year, whether they have successfully secured a place in residence.
- Please note that accommodation is not included in your programme offer. It is your responsibility to secure suitable accommodation before arriving on campus.
- It is also important to secure funding or financial aid before arranging private accommodation. Without confirmed financial support, assistance with any accommodation will unfortunately not be possible.
- Please be mindful of scams. Do not make any payments before you have viewed the dwelling or verified that it is accredited by the University.
Steps to secure private accommodation
- Secure funding.
- Consult the accredited private accommodation list available on this page only.
- Determine your budget and preferred location.
- Check the last two columns of the list to confirm current availability.
- Contact the landlord directly via phone or email.
- Ensure that you fully understand the terms and conditions of the lease agreement.
- Sign the lease agreement and, if applicable, upload it on the SUNStudent system to ensure that your accommodation allowance is paid.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR LANDLORDS
The criteria for accreditation are published in the Stellenbosch University Guidelines for Off-Campus Private Student Housing Accreditation.
Accreditation is granted annually based on the information provided in the application form. A site visit may be arranged during the course of the year.
Applying for accreditation
To complete the SU Private Accommodation Accreditation Application for 2026, landlords and agents must upload all required documentation. The application also requires the submission of photographs and/ or videos of the following:
- Bedrooms (including furniture and equipment per student)
- Kitchen or kitchenette facilities
- Bathrooms
- Safety and security measures in place

Please take note of the following:
- It remains the landlord’s responsibility to ensure that the accommodation meets the required standards and complies with the guidelines throughout the year.
- It remains the student’s responsibility to ensure that they understand the lease agreement, the cost of accommodation, and their obligations as a lessee.
- The lease agreement is entered into solely between the student and the landlord. Stellenbosch University is not a party to the agreement.
- Ultimately, the choice of suitable off-campus private accommodation rests with the student.
