Botanical Garden
Nestled in the heart of Stellenbosch, our Botanical Garden – the oldest university garden in South Africa – is a living showcase of diverse plant life from various parts of the world. Open to the public, it serves as a hub for conservation, teaching and research while providing a tranquil escape for visitors.
Stroll through the gardens, unwind at the Botanical Café, browse unique finds at the gift shop, or explore our plant sales area. We also welcome individuals and groups for professional shoots and larger gatherings with prior arrangements. Whether you’re here for learning, relaxation, or inspiration, our Botanical Garden offers a unique and enriching experience.
Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden is a proud Botanical Gardens Conservation International member, and an accredited Conservation Practitioner garden.
With diverse plant collections, glasshouses and educational programmes, we provide a dynamic space for learning, exploration and community engagement. Our botanical garden actively participates in regional plant preservation efforts and works with conservation organisations to protect threatened species. Our living collections contribute to scientific research, providing a valuable resource for researchers studying plant diversity, adaptation and sustainability.
Key initiatives focus on biodiversity preservation, research on indigenous and exotic plants and expert consultation on plant-related enquiries. These efforts support university teaching and underscore the vital role of plants in maintaining ecosystems and human well-being.
