About Commuter Student Communities

Connect Grow Thrive!

At Stellenbosch University we are committed to offering a holistic and inclusive student experience to all our students, regardless of where they live.

Approximately 76% of our students live in private accommodation and commute to campus each day. These students are supported through Commuter Student Communities (CSCs), which help them settle in, connect with others, and engage fully in campus life.

Through eleven undergraduate CSCs and postgraduate communities, the Unit for Commuter Student Communities (CSCU) provides welcoming and orientation programmes, peer mentoring, leadership development, and opportunities for social, cultural, and sporting engagement.

What You Should Know About CSCs

CSCs ensure that all commuter students have access to support, programmes, and shared facilities. The following outlines key information every commuter student should know as they prepare for their journey at SU.

Allocations

Pieke CSC

All SU students not allocated to a university residence will automatically be assigned to a Commuter Student Community (CSC) in accordance with the University’s Placement Policy.

  • Undergraduate students are allocated to one of 11 undergraduate CSCs.
  • Postgraduate students are allocated to dedicated postgraduate communities.

Newcomers must please note: Students remain in their allocated CSC for the duration of their studies. You cannot change your CSC.

Community and Support

Silene CSC

Commuter Student Communities are not residences and therefore DO NOT provide accommodation, but they offer comprehensive support and access to developmental opportunities, including:

  • Leadership and community engagement programmes
  • Academic and peer support initiatives
  • Access to shared facilities via the Cluster system that connects CSCs and residences to each other
  • Participation in joint programmes and activities with residence students

For assistance finding accommodation, commuter students must please refer to the SU Private Accommodation Office

CSC Fees

Capri CSC

All CSC students pay a CSC fee, as outlined in the Student Fees Yearbook (section 6.6 CSC Membership Dues). This fee supports access to shared Cluster facilities, co-curricular programmes, leadership development, and community initiatives. For detailed information on CSC fees and other fee-related matters applicable to CSC students, please consult the SU Student Fees Yearbook 2026.
