
Funding for study of African tonewoods

Prof Martina Meincken received research funding from the NRF through the competitive programme for rated researchers to study the acoustic properties of indigenous African wood species and their feasibility to be used as tonewoods. The grant is awarded for a period of three years and will support research into the improvement of acoustic properties of wood, as well as an objective comparison of the sound quality of violins made with traditional wood and the two “African violins".
