- Humanitarian Affairs Asia (HAA) invites students at Stellenbosch University to apply to participate in the 14th University Scholars Leadership Symposium (USLS).
- The Symposium will be held at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand, from 4 to 7 August 2026.
- Humanitarian Affairs Asia was established to tackle global challenges and serve society by empowering young people to get involved and transform their communities.
In a world shaped by increasingly complex and interconnected challenges – from climate change and widening inequalities to rapid technological transformation – institutions of higher learning play a vital role in shaping not only capable graduates, but principled leaders. Today, more than ever, there is a need to nurture young people who will lead with purpose, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility toward society.
It is in this spirit that Humanitarian Affairs Asia (HAA) invites students at Stellenbosch University to apply to participate in the 14th University Scholars Leadership Symposium (USLS) to be held at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand, from 4 to 7 August 2026.
Humanitarian Affairs Asia was established to tackle global challenges and serve society by empowering young people to get involved and transform their communities. It does this by instilling a commitment to give back and the attributes of servant leadership in the youth it serves.
USLS is a prestigious global platform that brings together carefully selected student leaders from around the world – individuals who are not only academically accomplished, but who demonstrate a strong commitment to using leadership as a force for good. It is designed to complement the work of educators by providing students with meaningful exposure to global issues, leadership development, and values-driven engagement.
Students who attend USLS will be able to:
engage in interactive capacity-building workshops facilitated by United Nations agencies, equipping participants with practical tools to address global challenges.
explore curated exhibitions highlighting UN initiatives, fostering a deeper understanding of multilateral systems and sustainable action.
connect with distinguished speakers, humanitarian practitioners, and fellow scholars in a diverse and purposeful international forum.
take part in Kindness Day, a hands-on community service experience that translates empathy into tangible social impact.
“The symposium brings together young leaders from around the world to engage in conversations on humanitarian affairs, leadership, global governance, and social impact, while building meaningful international friendships and networks. We sincerely hope this opportunity will inspire students from your university to step forward and represent South Africa on the global stage,” said Janice Leong, Regional Director at Humanitarian Affairs Asia.
The keynote speaker at this year’s symposium will be Prof. Kishore Mahbubani, former President of the United Nations Security Council and Founding Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. Alongside his role as visiting scholar at Harvard University, Prof Mahbubani has earned worldwide acclaim for his contributions to diplomacy, international relations, and global governance.
“His insights on leadership, diplomacy, and navigating an increasingly complex global landscape will provide tremendous value to students, particularly those aspiring to become thoughtful and globally minded leaders. His keynote session will encourage students to think critically about the future of international cooperation, ethical leadership, and the role young people can play in shaping a more interconnected and peaceful world.”
