SU Language Policy review

SU Language Policy (2021): review process

The SU Language Policy (2021), implemented in January 2022, is currently being revised. Section 10 of the SU Language Policy (2021) provides that the policy must be reviewed during its fifth year of operation.

The review of the policy also includes a formal public consultation phase to enable the broader SU community to provide input. All feedback collected during these processes will be carefully considered. The draft policy will then proceed through the formal governance structures at SU.

Public participation process

Members of the SU community are invited to provide input via a digital platform during the public participation process (18 May to 8 June 2026).

We invite comments on the following sections of the proposed draft policy, divided into three parts (A, B and C):

  • A: Sections 1-6 (Introduction, multilingual context, principles, etc.)
  • B: Section 7 (Policy provisions)
  • C: Sections 8-12 (Feedback, monitoring and conflict resolution, policy governance, review and revision, disclosure, definitions)

Please note:

  • Your feedback will be anonymous by default, unless you wish to comment on behalf of a group or prefer to disclose your name.
  • We will consider every comment received.
  • Where similar or identical comments are submitted, these will be collated into a single response to ensure clarity and transparency in the review process.
  • Click here to access the digital platform.

Milestones – 2026 review process

The review process forms part of the five-year review cycle prescribed in the SU Language Policy (2021) itself. The SU Language Policy (2021) was first implemented at the beginning of 2022.

Once the review is complete, a final draft Language Policy (2026) will be tabled for approval by Council by December 2026 after it has been approved and recommended to Council by the Institutional Forum and Senate.
